While some research has linked abortion to the development of mental health problems, a small new study says teenagers who undergo the procedure aren't more likely to be depressed and have low self-esteem than other pregnant teens.

"We know most teen pregnancies are not wanted pregnancies and an unwanted pregnancy can be very stressful," Warren said. "What we didn't know was whether psychological outcomes are worse for girls who choose abortion. This study says, 'No.' "

So much for all the NO choicers claim that abortion damages kids for life. Didn't think so! Always thought being a parent when that wasn't wanted was more damaging.

Makes sense, pregnancy, from what I have observed, is stressful on the body and mind and no one should be forced to carry against her will.

It's not too fun for the child involved either. Been there, done that. ; (

no one should be forced to carry against her will.

To bad her will wasn't intelligent enough to use birth control in the first place. =(

Not looking for an argument...just wishing that people would start thinking before acting.

Kimberly, if birth control was a) 100% effective and b) available to anyone who wanted it, you might have a point. It's neither.

But it is available to many who just didn't bother with protection or decided to worry about the consequences of unprotected sex later. It is those individuals who I wish had thought it out before acting on their desires.

We do need to make BC free for anyone but yeah...according to Gutmacher the vast majority of abortions occur from situations where no BC was used at all or was "not used consistently". That's a lot of preventable abortions.

Ah, so every parent in the last generation was a liberal, then? Not a single conservative spawned in the last generation?

If liberals are at fault, why are teen pregnancy rates higher in red states?

Hrm. My problem with the study, and any of the studies about teen pregnancies and abortions...

How often do the studies compare THREE categories... Teens who got pregnant and aborted... Teens who got pregnant and had the baby... and teens who didn't get pregnant at all? Maybe the link is that teens who get pregnant are more likely to have mental problems... particularly self-esteem issues.

Good point. If you have low self-esteem in the first place, dealing with a teenage pregnancy sure wouldn't help that much.

There are a whole lot of kids who LOOK to get pregnant cause they believe they aren't loved and look for a baby to solve that problem. A demanding infant certainly isn't a very viable solution!

Rainkiss, great observation on what is lacking for these studies.

Exactly, devilsadvocates. Or, a girl with low self-esteem may very well be the one to give in to a guy's pressure to have sex... and be less likely to demand he use protection.
